The smoke clears at Coconut Creek casino


Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (5550 N.W. 40th St. Coconut Creek, 954-977-6700, CasinoCoco.com) recently opened a smoke-free gaming area on its second floor. Called level2, it's insulated from tobacco smoke on the floor below by a thick floor and has a different ventilation system.

According to Jonathan Marcus, the casino's vice president of marketing, level2 has "its own 40-ton unit with separate, 100 percent fresh air intake."

Inquest into death of man shot by police outside New Westminster casino views video of confrontation


A man who died after being shot by police during a standoff outside the Starlight Casino repeatedly insisted on speaking with his ex-girlfriend while he was surrounded by snipers and armoured vehicles.

And Mehrdad Bayrami, while holding a loaded gun to his temple, told a police negotiator he was going to kill himself because he didn’t want to return to prison.

Body of Durban casino-goer found seated in car in VIP parking lot


In an incident that beggars belief, the body of a Durban businessman sat upright in his car in the VIP parking section of the Suncoast Casino for up to eight hours, unnoticed in the scorching heat, after he apparently took his own life on Tuesday.

It is understood that security personnel at the casino eventually noticed the body and called emergency services to the scene.

Senators again reject Louise Lucas' casino bills


A Senate committee has again rejected a proposal by Sen. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, to create a casino gaming commission and allow a casino in her city.

Two of Lucas’ bills on casinos were killed Feb. 1 in the Senate General Laws and Technology Committee. The third was killed Monday by a committee vote of 7-5.
